A Study on the Relationship between Houseworks and Low Back Pain in Middle-aged Women

Abstract
Objectives : This study examined the relationship between low back pain and housework in middle - aged women.

Methods : A questionnaire was administered for 150 middled-aged housewives in Gwangju and Jeonnam regions from July 1 to September 30, 2001 and 102 responded. Functional disability due to low back pain was assessed by Oswestry¡¯s questionnaire for low back pain disability and housework hour was measured with a tool devised by Park. SPSS 7.5 for windows was used for data analysis.

Results : Younger housewives spent more hours for houseworks, i.e. women of 40-49 years old spent 60.6 minutes for home management and 365.8 minutes for family care per weekday while 50-59 years old women spent 50.0 and 180.7 minutes respectively on the average. Women with middle school education spent 368.9 minutes for family care and 62.1 minutes for home management whereas women with high school education spent 221.0 and 55.8 minutes respectively. On the contrary, women with higher income spent more time for family care and home management. On holiday, women spent more time for houseworks. Factor related with functional disability due to low back pain was age. Hours of housework was not associated with functional disability.

Conclusions : Low back pain of middle-aged housewives was related to age but not to the hours of houseworks.
